Big News for IUD Accessibility in BC

This is very exciting news for sexual and reproductive health care in BC!

After nearly 2 decades of advocacy (since certified practice was initiated in 2008), in June 2025, The BC College of Nurses approved language within the scope of practice to enable RNs to become IUD inserters. Nurses with advanced certified practice in sexual health are well-suited to insert IUDs paired with their strong clinical training, expertise in reproductive health, and patient-centered approach. They are skilled in contraceptive counseling, pelvic examinations, and trauma-informed care, making them particularly effective at supporting diverse patient needs. Their ability to provide clear, nonjudgmental education helps patients make informed choices, the ability to add IUD insertion to their practice has the potential to expand access, reduce wait times, and enhance the overall quality of contraceptive care.

Options own Clinical Director Nicole Pasquino (in her role as Nursing Consultant with NNPBC) authored the first ever IUD Decision Support Tool (DST), a province wide clinic tool required for RNs to include IUD insertions as a part of their practice. In addition to DST guidance, this new scope requires certified RNs to receive additional hands-on education to learn IUD insertions. The required education is only offered by the SOGC, at a cost, and there is a limited number of trainers. Options are leading the way funding training opportunities for 19 of their RNS across the province, as well as 2 MDs that have been trained to province preceptorship to clinicians becoming IUD inserters.

These RNs will be the first RNs in BC and Canada to be recognized as IUD inserters. The demand for IUDs surged greatly in BC in the wake of free contraception, this has also led to longer wait times for insertion appointments due to limited providers across the province.  This increase in IUD RN scope is key in providing more access to IUD insertions, reducing barriers, and increasing patient support.

We are so excited about this new opportunity for our RNs, and for our patients. Congratulations to our clinical team for being inspiring leaders in the sexual and reproductive health care landscape in BC! Way to go team!!
