Every 2 weeks or so we’re reviewing books that we found interesting. These books may range from nonfiction to fantasy to informative to escapism. Our hope is that we find something for everyone, and to broaden awareness, access, and information pertaining to sex, sexual health, pleasure, and\ beyond!
Big Swiss by Jen Beagin is a sharp, offbeat, and deeply funny novel that explores trauma, desire, and the ethical complexities of an unconventional relationship. The story follows Greta, a transcriptionist for a sex therapist, who becomes infatuated with one of the clients she listens to — a woman she subsequently dubs “Big Swiss.” When they cross paths in real life, Greta knowingly builds a relationship on secrets and half-truths.
This book has a compelling, original, voice and blends dark humour with insights about grief and shame. The characters are eccentric and messy in the best way. The relationship between Greta and Big Swiss is emotionally charged and wildly bizarre, but also has moments of real connection.
It’s a book that isn’t afraid to be weird, and that’s exactly what makes it so good. Big Swiss also handles queerness and mental health with empathy that feels honest without being heavy-handed. It’s a wild ride, but one that’s grounded by strong writing and a lot of heart.
Maybe it’s your next vacation read?
