Every 2 weeks or so we’re reviewing books that we found interesting. These books may range from nonfiction to fantasy to informative to escapism. Our hope is that we find something for everyone, and to broaden awareness, access, and information pertaining to sex, sexual health, pleasure, and beyond!
The Safekeep is a gripping and intense historical fiction novel about love, obsession, and the complicated idea of what makes a place a home. It’s set in a post-war European town and follows a group of characters, primarily surrounding the book’s protagonist Isabel, whose lives are more deeply entangled than what appears on the surface. What makes this book stand out is its unique, complex relationships. The connections between the characters, whether that be siblings, lovers or friends, are unlike anything I’ve read before. They feel raw and at times uncomfortable, but always real. The author, Yael van der Wouden, explores how home can be something you find in a person as much as in a place, and how that can be both comforting and dangerous at the same time.
This is a super engaging novel that also explores sexuality and queer identity in a very thoughtful way, and I’d highly recommend it to fans of both thriller and queer romance reads!
