Book Review: People We Meet On Vacation by Emily Henry

Every 2 weeks or so we’re reviewing books that we found interesting. These books may range from nonfiction to fantasy to informative to escapism. Our hope is that we find something for everyone, and to broaden awareness, access, and information pertaining to sex, sexual health, pleasure, and beyond!

People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry is a romance novel following best friends Poppy and Alex over the course of 12 years and 10 different summer vacations. During university they make a promise to take a trip together every summer as a way to keep in touch, however a few years ago something went wrong on a trip, something that Poppy is hoping to fix this summer.

The story is both funny and heartfelt and includes a lot of fun travel destinations, one of which includes Vancouver Island! Movie fans will be glad to hear that a Netflix adaptation of the novel is premiering this week. Readers will easily be able to related to Poppy as she wonders whether she’s satisfied with her life and if she’s where she thought she would be in life. And of course, above all, Alex and Poppy’s relationship is cute and showcases their friendship beautifully.

Readers should be aware that Emily Henry’s books tend to have some sex scenes, however they tend to not be too graphic. Those scenes also include positive communication, specifically about having safe sex and about how to prevent pregnancy, such as birth control usage and the male character having a vasectomy. It is important to note that the vasectomy conversation is only in the North American version of the book (the one titled “People We Meet On Vacation”) while the European/UK version (titled “You and Me On Vacation”) has omitted that part of the story.

This book is be a great read for people who are in need of a summer themed romance to escape the rainy Vancouver weather, people who enjoy watching book to movie adaptations and for fans of “When Harry Met Sally”.
