Book Review: Hockey Girl Loves Drama Boy by Faith Erin Hicks

Every 2 weeks or so we’re reviewing books that we found interesting. These books may range from nonfiction to fantasy to informative to escapism. Our hope is that we find something for everyone, and to broaden awareness, access, and information pertaining to sex, sexual health, pleasure, and beyond!

Hockey Girl Loves Drama Boy by Faith Erin Hicks is a lovely graphic novel following two high schoolers (Alix and Ezra) from Vancouver Island as they navigate trying to be better versions of themselves while growing up.

The story begins with Alix lashing out due to a bullying incident on her hockey team, and her seeking out Ezra, one of her classmates, to help show her how to manage her anger better. Over time the two develop a friendship and more as they help each other navigate through complicated situations.

The story involves a lot of heavier but important topics regarding mental health, bullying, familial misunderstandings, discovering sexuality and familial abuse, and address all of them with care and in a manner that younger audiences will relate to. The novel subtly involves discussions around consent in a way that feels natural and well integrated into the lives of the characters, and the conversations around Ezra’s sexual ambiguity provides a representation that is often left out where LGBTQ individuals are represented.

Another stand out to the story, is that Alix is a taller than Ezra and at no point is that viewed as a negative, but rather as something Ezra likes in her, which may just heal something in anyone who has ever felt insecure about being taller than their partner.

This graphic novel would be perfect for any hockey fans, drama nerds, those dealing with bullying or trying to find their place, or simply those looking to read a story set in British Columbia.
