Did you know we have a new process in BC for Pap tests?
You can now take your cervical health into your own hands – literally – with at-home test kits. You can still see a health care provider in office if you choose, but let’s look at the at-home option!
Who should have cervical screenings?
- Anyone with a cervix between 25-69 years of age
How often should you screen?
- Every 3-5 years
Why?
- The self-screen option is an alternative to the Pap that gives you the flexibility to undertake the screening somewhere you might feel more comfortable, like at home
- Cervical screening looks for human papillomavirus (HPV) as this is the virus that causes cervical cancer
How do you use a cervix self-screening kit?
- Request a free kit online or by phone
- Online form: https://submit.healthcarebc.ca/bccancer/cervix-screening-kit
- Phone number: 1-877-702-6566
- Your kit will arrive about 2 weeks after you request it
- It will be in a plain, unmarked envelope
- Follow the instructions inside the kit
- You can even request the instructions in multiple languages and with gender inclusive language
- The instructions go into more detail, but you can expect to insert a q-tip like swab a couple inches into your vagina to collect the sample
- You can find more detailed instructions on the BC Cancer website: http://www.bccancer.bc.ca/screening/cervix/how-it-works/what-is-cervix-self-screening
- Return your completed kit by mail
- You and your health care provider will receive results about 8 weeks after testing
- You’ll also be able to find your results here: https://www.healthgateway.gov.bc.ca/
