Book Review: The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Every 2 weeks or so we’re reviewing books that we found interesting. These books may range from nonfiction to fantasy to informative to escapism. Our hope is that we find something for everyone, and to broaden awareness, access, and information pertaining to sex, sexual health, pleasure, and beyond!

I read this book in one setting!

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid is both a love story and a love letter to queer history. This book is set across multiple decades in Hollywood. It follows the movie star and icon Evelyn Hugo, who finally agrees to tell her life story to an unknown journalist, Monique Grant. What unfolds is a sweeping narrative that moves through decades of Evelyn’s dazzling career and her seven marriages, revealing the complicated truths behind the public image.

The novel explores themes of sexuality, identity, and the cost of reinvention. The framing device of Monique’s involvement adds an extra layer, gradually weaving Evelyn’s past into Monique’s present. Ultimately, this is not just a story about Hollywood intrigue, but about the courage it takes to live authentically — and the regrets that linger when you can’t.

What do you think about this stunning tale?
