At Home Cervical Test Kits

Did you know we have a new process in BC for Pap tests?
You can now take your cervical health into your own hands – literally – with at-home test kits. You can still see a health care provider in office if you choose, but let’s look at the at-home option!
Who should have cervical screenings?
  • Anyone with a cervix between 25-69 years of age

How often should you screen?

  • Every 3-5 years
Why?
  • The self-screen option is an alternative to the Pap that gives you the flexibility to undertake the screening somewhere you might feel more comfortable, like at home
  • Cervical screening looks for human papillomavirus (HPV) as this is the virus that causes cervical cancer
How do you use a cervix self-screening kit?
  1. Request a free kit online or by phone
    1. Online form: https://submit.healthcarebc.ca/bccancer/cervix-screening-kit
    2. Phone number: 1-877-702-6566
  2. Your kit will arrive about 2 weeks after you request it
    1. It will be in a plain, unmarked envelope
  3. Follow the instructions inside the kit
    1. You can even request the instructions in multiple languages and with gender inclusive language
    2. The instructions go into more detail, but you can expect to insert a q-tip like swab a couple inches into your vagina to collect the sample
    3. You can find more detailed instructions on the BC Cancer website: http://www.bccancer.bc.ca/screening/cervix/how-it-works/what-is-cervix-self-screening
  4. Return your completed kit by mail
  5. You and your health care provider will receive results about 8 weeks after testing
    1. You’ll also be able to find your results here: https://www.healthgateway.gov.bc.ca/
