Book Review: Last Night at the Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo

Every 2 weeks or so we’re reviewing books that we found interesting. These books may range from nonfiction to fantasy to informative to escapism. Our hope is that we find something for everyone, and to broaden awareness, access, and information pertaining to sex, sexual health, pleasure, and\ beyond!

Last Night at the Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo is set in the 50s in San Francisco. Lily Hu is a Chinese American teenager whose world expands when she meets Kath and discovers the Telegraph Club — a hidden lesbian bar that becomes both a sanctuary and a spark for self-discovery.

This book does an incredible job of weaving together queer identity, coming of age, and historical fiction. What makes the book resonate is not just the love story but the way it illuminates how identity, family, and politics collide in deeply personal ways. This is a beautifully researched novel at the intersection of queer history and Chinese American history.
