Sexually transmitted diseases are more common than any of us likes to admit. Each year, between 15 and 20 million people contract a sexually transmitted disease in the United States alone. What can help lower those numbers is easy information and increased notification for those infected.
People fail to notify sexual partners for a wide variety of reasons, often linked to embarrassment. The San Francisco Department of Public Health, along with the nonprofit organization Internet Sexuality Information Services (ISIS), studied men who have sex with men. They found that while men were liable to tell committed partners about an STD diagnosis, they were less likely to notify casual sexual partners of the same diagnosis. However, men were more likely to inform casual partners if there was a convenient and anonymous method, the study found.
That safe, convenient, and anonymous approach is here. The site is inSPOT.org, a notification service that allows people with sexually transmitted diseases to notify sexual partners by e-mail.
