Dan,
We are the nurses who provide comprehensive sexual health information through the Facts of Life Line at Options for Sexual Health in BC, and we are avid readers of your column. We'd like to add to your response to Frigid Frustrated Fool. Many people think that if they're not sexually active (and how people define that really varies!), they don't need to have regular sexual health check-ups. But check-ups can identify problematic health conditions that affect sex drive, gratification and self-image- it's possible that FFF's weight gain and hair growth could be caused by an underlying health issue that can be treated if she speaks to a doctor or nurse about it. So, while we like your advice that FFF get out there, take risks, find physical comfort, emotional gratification and sexual contact - she should also protect herself against STIs, find a contraceptive method that's right for her, and talk to a knowledgeable, non-judgmental health care professional.
